I suppose I’m not the only person who was shocked to hear the news that Esperanza Aguire’s decision to put Catholic priests on the Ethics Committees of all of Madrid’s public hospitals. (maybe I shouldn’t have been so shocked given we’re talking about Esperanza!) I may not be a Spanish citizen, but I do have permanent residency, pay taxes and rely on these hospitals for my health care. I’m not Catholic and do not see why decisions that affect my health should include this one religious point of view. It is obvious that doctors, nurses and other medical staff should be part of those committees but…who else do you think should be there? Who should be in charge of discussing the ethics matters? How is it in the States?
